There are presently 3 types of gathering skills in the game - Cultivation, Butchering, and Scavenging. Each character may learn 1 type of gathering skill .

Butchering and scavenging are pretty similar. After an enemy corpse is initially looted, flies will start to buzz around the corpse indicating that it can be butchered or scavenged. A variety of items can be obtained from butchering and scavenging - most of which are used in Alchemy and Cultivation. Butchering only works on animal corpses, while scavenging works on humanoid corpses. The "owner" of a kill gets first crack at the butchering / scavenging rights. After about 15 seconds, the corpse can then be butchered / scavenged by anyone.

NOTE: You can scavenge from the corpses of enemy players.

Even if you decide not to persue a crafting skill, butchering and scavenging are excellent sources of income. Just by selling the various components you obtain to NPC vendors, you will approximately double your income. Selling components to other players could potentially rake in even more cash.
