You need not engage in PvP combat to complete them, but chances are you will have no choice:

- Collect supplies from a war-torn city.
- Light the signal pyre near the docks.

In addition to these methods of obtaining XP in PvP, the Tome of Knowledge also throws it's two cents in. Each unlock provides a fair amount of XP. Some examples:

- Encountered a Marauder in PvP combat.
- Delivered 10 deathblows to enemy players.
- Died 10 times in PvP combat.

Gear can also be picked up from PvP combat. New Renown Reward Gear is available for purchase every time your Renown Rank increases. In addition, gear is often found on the corpses of slain enemy players. This gear is often quite powerful for its level.
